Autumn in Devon is an absolutely gorgeous time of year. There’s a crisp feel in the air, fires in pubs are aglow and we know that the fun and festivities of Christmas are just around the corner.
With the glorious autumn colours visible throughout the area, now is the perfect time to head out on a brisk country walk to drink in the very best of this season. Here are a couple of our favourite destinations.
Haldon Forest Park
Haldon Forest Park comprises 3,500 acres of woodland and is easily accessible from Exeter. The trails are ideal for hiking, runny and walking as well as being open to cyclists with some brilliant mounting biking routes available.
Most popular is a 7.5km circular trail that will take you around 2 hours 20 minutes to complete. There is plenty of parking on site as well as toilets and a cafe. Along the route there are benches if you need a rest midway as well as providing a great opportunity to take in the views. If the weather is against you, there’s plenty of canopy to shield you from the worst of the rain!
Teign Gorge
This lovely walk begins near Castle Drogo and is possibly the most famous walk on Dartmoor. Situated on the edge of Dartmoor National Park on a granite outcrop, Castle Drogo is famous for being the last castle to be built in England and is Grade I Listed.
The walk takes you along the Hunters Path situated high above the River Teign, providing ample opportunities to take in the stunning views and perhaps spot the deer or hares in the distance. You’ll also enjoy crossing the suspension bridge where you can look downstream to spot the Drogo Weir.
It’s a four mile walk that will take around 2.5hrs to complete so pack some snacks for along the way!
